Many times during our day, things go exactly the way we want them to. Yet, when something doesn’t go according to the plan, we get upset.
It happened to me two days ago, when I was giving a formal speech at CIC’s convocation ceremony and in front of me was the Deputy Minister, Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, Datuk Wira Mas Ermieyati Samsudin who officiated the ceremony.
It had been about 20 years when my speech went all right, normally with impressive feedback from the audience. So this time I thought it would be the same. Although it was kind of nervous the night before (a strange feeling that usually did not happen to me) but thought positively, I affirmed that nothing would go wrong as it never went wrong before…
When I reached the event place I was occupied attending to the Deputy Minister, accompanying her for the refreshment, chatting and ushering her. Upon entering the hall, my personal assistant came and told me that my speech text was lost. I insisted her to find it howsoever. Finally she found and handed over to me. The opening audio also went wrong with the technical issue. Soon I was called to the stage to give my official speech as the company’s CEO in front of the Deputy Minister, her ministry team and hundreds of customers.
I opened my speech well and started reading the first page. Turning to the 2nd page immediately I noticed I uttered some words which were not related to the previous page. The text was not in proper sequence. The paragraphs were all mixed up. Oh so vulnerable.. I had uttered some words that were not in right flow while hundreds of audience were quiet lending their ears to me in a formal function.. “What am I gonna do”, Oh my PA.. why has she done with the text, ya Allah why is this happening.. oh what am I going to talk..” All were in my mind in once.
Normally I was good at giving a speech even a promptu speech, provided that the ideas were in my mind. But that time I became blank and had no idea to talk as the ideas were all mixed up and as I started reading the text for formal speech, I did not know whether it was proper to change to a casual speech. All happened in a sudden and I needed to keep uttering words.. I cannot stop to turn around and change the speech style. It was a formal function. I kept brainstorming wildly. But I was not that fast and had no plan B, I just uttered whatever came across my mind without much real message given. And I ended with thank you.
Oh.. I felt so bad and embarrased. It did not just go exactly as planned.. Right when you think something is going great, something bad happens. So what can we do about it?? I learned from this and hope by sharing can benefit you all too.
On that day Datuk Wira Mas Ermieyati Samsudin was very supportive with her positive words on me.
We will get occupied with the problems, however if we think back, the things that go right, relatively many more than the things that go wrong. It is so hard to see the goodness in many other things, sometimes because we think that problems are unbearable.
Bad things will happen. It is easier said than done to look at the positives over the negatives. I believe I just need some training to get myself used to plan for the worst scenario to occur!
What I want to share is that there are ways to face the unfortunate cicumstances so that we can make it through the unexpected situations. We can come out stronger than ever and better equipped for the storms that will inevitably come our way in the future.
We cannot change the outside factors but we can change our inner feeling. Choose constant inner happiness, regardless of what is happening on the outside. Trust things are going to be all right. After the storm there will be the rainbow.
Be positive, even when we are not. When people greet us and ask how we are, we will respond positively, even when we are having a bad day. We will make ourselves believe in the positive words.
If we keep telling ourselves, or telling others, that we are having a particularly bad day, well, that’s exactly the kind of day we are going to have. There is true power in thoughts and words!
We are what we proclaim. Whether we succeed or fail is determined in our mind way before it happens for real, consider this for a moment. Change our thoughts, and our life will follow.
Life is amazing. All we need to do is just to believe in Allah.. He giveth us a lot of blessings. Alhamdulillah.
